Wasini is a small, car-free coral island off Kenya’s far south coast, opposite Shimoni — famous for its ‘coral garden’ boardwalk, mangroves, superb Swahili seafood, and as the gateway to the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park. The classic visit is a dhow day trip that combines snorkelling (and often dolphins) at Kisite-Mpunguti — Kenya’s best reef — with a walk on Wasini’s raised fossil-coral garden and mangrove boardwalk, a stroll through the traditional village, and a renowned seafood lunch (crab and grilled fish). There are no cars, no roads to speak of, and no mains water — the small Swahili community collects rainwater and lives by fishing and, increasingly, by welcoming visitors. The classic day here is a joy.
