The best time to visit Mombasa is December to March, when it’s hot, dry and sunny with the warmest, calmest sea — peak beach season. June to October is cooler and drier too, great for safaris but breezier, with some seaweed on the north-coast beaches. Avoid the long rains of April and May. It stays warm year-round (24–33°C), so any month works for the beach — the choice really comes down to crowds, price and sea conditions.

Crowds, prices, seaweed & events
The busiest, most expensive spells are Christmas–New Year and the July–August European holidays. For the same weather at lower prices, aim for early December, late January to March, or October.
Seagrass washes onto Nyali and Bamburi mainly June–September; resorts rake it, and Diani stays cleaner. If spotless sand matters, come December–March or head south.
During Ramadan many local eateries close by day and reopen after sunset; hotels run as normal. Dates shift each year, so check if you want the full street-food scene.

Aim for the shoulders, skip the extremes
Everyone piles in at Christmas, and the weather is glorious, but you’ll pay peak prices and share the beach. If you can be flexible, the sweet spots are late January to early March and the back half of October — you get the same warm, dry days and calm sea without the holiday surcharge or the crowds. That’s when I’d send family.
The one window I’d genuinely steer people away from is late April into May. The long rains are no drizzle; they can wash out a beach week entirely, and the sea turns murky. If those are your only dates, keep the plan flexible, lean on the indoor and cultural side of Mombasa, and consider the south coast, which shrugs off the weather a little better. Otherwise, almost any month here rewards you.
