The short answer — 3 days in Mombasa

Three days is the sweet spot for a first visit — enough for history, beaches and wildlife without rushing. Spend Day 1 on the city’s past: Fort Jesus, the Old Town’s carved-door lanes and the Tusks, with Swahili food and a sunset at Mama Ngina Waterfront. Spend Day 2 on the coast: a morning on Nyali or Bamburi beach, snorkelling the Marine Park, and a sunset dhow cruise or seafood at Tamarind. Spend Day 3 on wildlife: Haller Park and Nguuni, or a Shimba Hills safari. Grouping by area keeps travel short; base yourself on the north coast. Budget roughly KES 15,000–80,000 per person depending on style. See our budget guide.

How to spend three days

History, beach and wildlife — balanced

Why this order works.

Mombasa packs three very different experiences into a small area — a 16th-century Swahili-Portuguese port city, a reef-fringed coastline, and easy access to African wildlife — and three days lets you taste all of them. The trick is to group each day by geography so you spend your time enjoying places rather than sitting in traffic: the historic sights cluster on Mombasa Island, the best beaches and the marine park sit together on the north coast, and the wildlife parks are a short hop inland.

This itinerary does exactly that. Day one is the island’s history and atmosphere; day two is beach and reef on the north coast; day three flexes to your taste — gentle wildlife close to town, or a bigger safari day trip. Everything below links to the full guide for each stop, so you can swap pieces in and out. Base yourself in Nyali or Bamburi to keep the beach and parks on your doorstep. Tap the tabs for each day’s plan.

3-day itinerary questions, unpacked

Tap for where to stay, getting around and how to adapt it.

Where should I base myself?
Nyali or Bamburi on the north coast is ideal for this itinerary — you’re on the beach, near the marine park, Haller Park and Nguuni, and only a short bridge crossing (no ferry) from the Old Town. See staying in Nyali and Bamburi, or browse hotels by budget.
How do I get around?
Tuk-tuks and Bolt/Uber for the city and beaches, organised tours for the reef and any safari. A private car and driver for the wildlife day is convenient. The Old Town is best on foot. See taxis & apps and our getting-around guide.
Can I add a safari?
Yes — day three is the place for it. Shimba Hills is the closest (half-day), while Tsavo East is better as an overnight if you can add a night. If a safari is a priority, consider the 5-day beaches + safari itinerary instead, which builds in an overnight. See all tours.
What if I’m travelling with kids?
Swap in family-friendly stops: Haller Park’s animal feeding, Nguuni’s giraffes, Wild Waters and Mamba Village all suit children, and the beach day stays the same. See our Mombasa with kids guide for a family spin on this plan.
When is the best time to do it?
The dry seasons — December–March (hot, clear sea) or June–September (cooler) — are best, giving reliable beach and reef days. Avoid the peak long rains (April–May) if you can. See best time to visit and weather by month.

Our commitment · Conservation & restoration

Three days, a lighter footprint

Mombasa Kenya (mombasakenya.org) is committed to the restoration and conservation of the reefs, wildlife and Swahili heritage this itinerary is built around — Fort Jesus and the Old Town, the Marine Park’s coral, and the restored parks at Haller and Nguuni. A short trip can still tread lightly and give back to the places it enjoys.

Travel kindly across all three days: use reef-safe sunscreen and never touch coral on the beach day, pay the park and marine fees that fund protection, refuse single-use plastic (banned in Kenya since 2017), support local guides and eateries, and respect heritage sites. A well-planned trip protects what makes it special. See the reef responsibly →
